Image Quality & Setup
Even Light, Sharp Image. Set Up Köhler.
A quick reference for getting even, glare-free illumination on a brightfield lab microscope.
Uneven brightness, glare, or a washed-out image usually comes down to how the light is set up, not the scope. Köhler setup lines up the light path so the whole field is evenly lit and the condenser is doing its job. It takes about two minutes, and once you've done it a few times it becomes automatic.
Do this
- Focus a slide at 10x first. Raise the condenser close to the top before you start. Any slide with good contrast works.
- Close the field diaphragm. That's the ring on the base. Close it until you see a small bright shape. Fuzzy and off to the side is normal at this point.
- Focus the condenser. Raise or lower it until the edges of that shape are sharp. Sharp edges mean the condenser is at the right height.
- Center it. Use the condenser centering screws to move the shape to the middle of the view.
- Open the field back up. Stop just as the edges leave the view.
- Set the aperture diaphragm. Take out one eyepiece and look down the tube. Close the aperture until it covers about 20 to 30% of the bright circle.
- Repeat for a big power change. Switching to a much higher or lower objective? Run the setup again.
Avoid this
- Using the aperture diaphragm for brightness. It controls contrast and resolution, not brightness. Use the brightness dial.
- Opening the field diaphragm all the way. Extra field only adds glare and washes out contrast.
- Leaving the condenser cranked down. A low condenser gives a dim, flat, uneven image.
- Closing the aperture too far. Contrast goes up, but fine detail disappears.
- Forcing centering screws. If the condenser won't center or won't stay put, that's a service call.

Still seeing haze after setup? Work through Hazy Image? Check This First. Dirty optics are the next most common cause.
Can't get the condenser to center, or the light still looks uneven? That's when it's worth a call. We'll take it from there.
