No Diaphragm? Center Your Light Anyway.
A quick reference for budget vet and student microscopes that have no field or aperture diaphragm.
Uneven light, brighter on one side of the view? On a lab microscope you'd fix that with Köhler setup, which starts by closing the field diaphragm. Many clinic and classroom scopes don't have one. A stiff card with a small hole over the light port does the same job, so you can find the light and center it with the condenser screws. It takes about a minute.
Do this
- Focus a slide at 10x first. Any slide with good contrast works.
- Condenser up, then back a hair. Raise it all the way, then lower it just slightly.
- Card on the light port. Center a 1/4 in hole over the light. It stands in for the missing field diaphragm.
- Lower the condenser until the hole is sharp. Look in and go slowly. The blurry glow turns into a crisp, bright disc.
- Center it with the screws. Turn the two condenser centering screws until the disc sits in the middle of the view.
- Condenser up, card off. Raise the condenser back up and take the card away. Pull one eyepiece and look down the tube: the circle of light should be centered and even.
- Too bright? Turn down the brightness dial.
Avoid this
- Dimming with the condenser. Lowering it to cut glare leaves the image flat and uneven. Use the brightness dial.
- A thin or light-colored card. Light leaks through and washes out the disc. Use a dark, stiff card, or stack two.
- A hole that's too big. A big hole fills the view, so there's no edge to focus or center.
- Forcing the centering screws. If the disc won't center or won't stay put, that's a service call.
- Leaving the card on. It's a setup tool. Take it off before you read slides.

If the condenser can't bring the hole into focus on your scope, drop to 4x, lower the condenser until you can see the light itself, and center that instead. Still seeing haze after setup? Work through Hazy Image? Check This First.
Try it in 3D or VR
Practice the card method on a 3D microscope with no field diaphragm: place the card, focus the hole, center it, and take the card off. Open the DIY field stop lab on a phone or computer, or in the Meta Quest browser for VR.
Watch it in a minute
Disc won't center, or the light still looks uneven? That's when it's worth a call. We'll take it from there.
