Eyepiece Care

Clean the Eyepiece. Don't Scratch It.

A quick reference for removing makeup, skin oil, and everyday gunk from microscope eyepieces — without scratching them.

Tim Pellerin · Sky Optical Services

In a shared lab, an eyepiece gets more contact than almost any other part of the microscope. Every time someone presses their eye to the lens, they leave a little behind — skin oil, makeup, eyelash residue. It builds up fast, and if more than one person uses the scope, that buildup compounds even faster.

Most "the scope is going bad" complaints turn out to be nothing more than a dirty eyepiece. Before assuming the instrument needs service, check this first.
